The 3-Step Technique for Using a Fire Blanket Safely
Fire blankets are an essential, often overlooked component of basic fire safety in both commercial kitchens and domestic settings. They are designed to smother small, contained fires, specifically those involving cooking oils, fats, or clothing, by cutting off the oxygen supply.
While simple in principle, knowing the correct technique for deployment is crucial. An improperly used fire blanket can push fire toward the user or fail to extinguish the flame. As experts in fire safety solutions, preparedness is paramount.
Here is the straightforward, three-step technique for safe and effective fire blanket use, which should be practised and understood by all occupants and staff.
Step 1: Preparation - Safety First and Ready the Blanket
Before you even approach the fire, ensure you have taken critical steps to protect yourself and prevent the fire from escalating:
- Activate the Alarm: Yell "Fire!" or activate the nearest fire alarm call point immediately to alert others. Safety is always a team effort, and you may need assistance.
- Safety Stance: Adopt a wide, protective stance. Keep your feet shoulder-width apart and keep your body shielded behind the blanket as much as possible. This is your primary shield against heat and potential flames.
- Remove Power Source: If the fire is electrical (e.g., in a fryer or pan on a hob), switch off the power or gas supply immediately if it is safe to do so. This eliminates the continuous heat source.
- Unfurl and Shield Hands: Quickly pull the two tabs (or handles) to remove the blanket from its container. Critically, fold the top edges of the blanket over your hands, wrapping your hands protected by the material. This shields your skin from the intense heat and flames as you move closer to the fire.
Remember: Only use a fire blanket if the fire is small and contained. If the fire is spreading or too large, evacuate immediately and call 999.
Step 2: Deployment - Approach and Smother
Once the blanket is prepared and you are protected, the deployment must be executed quickly and carefully:
- Approach Safely: Hold the blanket in front of you, low to the ground, maintaining a shield between you and the fire. Move slowly towards the blaze.
- Lay, Don't Throw: The key is to place the blanket over the fire gently. Do not throw it from a distance. Throwing the blanket can push oxygen under the flame or splatter burning liquid.
- Smother Completely: Start by covering the nearest edge of the fire, then carefully pull the blanket over the entire flame and pan or appliance. Ensure the entire area of the fire is smothered and sealed from the air.
The blanket must create a tight seal over the heat source. If air can still reach the fuel source, the fire will likely continue to burn.
Step 3: Post-Extinguishment - Wait and Call for Help
The moments immediately following the smothering are just as important as the deployment itself:
- Leave It Covered: Do not lift the blanket to check if the fire is out. Leave the blanket completely covering the appliance or pan. The blanket should be left in place for a minimum of 30 minutes to allow the heat source to cool completely. Removing the blanket too soon will reintroduce oxygen and risk re-ignition (flashback).
- Ventilate: Once the immediate danger has passed, open windows and doors to ventilate the area, but only if they are not near the fire.
- Report and Review: If the fire involved an appliance, switch off the power at the main breaker. Contact the fire brigade if you have any doubts about the safety, or if the fire was anything more than minor.
Beyond the Blanket: Ensuring Readiness
A fire blanket is only effective if it is readily accessible, in good condition, and certified to BS EN 1869:2019. As fire safety experts, Fire Stoppers recommends that all fire blankets, especially in commercial premises, be checked annually as part of your broader Fire Risk Assessment (FRA).
Proper placement (near the hazard but not too close that it is inaccessible) and regular inspection are essential to ensuring your fire blanket is your reliable first line of defence.
